The level of adjustability in modern day mountain bike suspension forks is mind boggling with most entry level forks offering at least 2 methods of external tuning! Here’s how you can adjust your air volume spacers in most modern MTB suspension forks.

Being able to adjust your compression and rebound speed is nothing new, but being able to fine tune your fork to be more progressive using air volume spacers has really caught on with manufacturers in the last few years. This allows riders to get closer to how they want their fork to ride beyond just changing the air pressure.

If you feel that you’re blowing through all the travel in your fork really quickly, either bottoming out very frequently on big hits or riding too low in the travel over average trail bumps then this is the process you need to go through to adjust it! By installing spacers you can run the same air pressure (so the same suspension sag and the same small bump compliance) whilst having your fork ramp up, making the end of the stroke harder to reach!

No or few spacers installed in your suspension fork will allow it to compress through it’s travel as standard, compressing the air in the chamber. By installing air volume spacers you’re compressing the same amount of air into a smaller space, making it more difficult to use all of your travel.

This is a very similar process in all modern air mountain bike suspension forks. The only difference between Fox and Rockshox is that the Fox requires a larger socket to remove the air leg cap and requires the fox specific ‘clip-in’ volume spacer rather than the Rockshox specific screw in ‘bottomless token.’

Remember to take note of your air pressure and make sure that all air is released before removing the air caps at the top of the leg.
